I want to know if I have to rebuild my engine or can I just get away with replacing the bearings and machining the crank? I have a 2003 Celica and I went less than a mile while it was knocking.

I have a 350 engine I am rebuilding w/ little/no money- need advice?

Steve asked:

I am breaking the motor down completely, and do not anticipate to have any machine work done, except have the cam and crank inspected. I plan to hone cylinders, new rings, possibly new pistons, all bearings, gaskets… not sure what I need to do w/ the heads w/out sending them to the machine shop…
Can someone please send me some pointers in breaking this motor down, and putting it all back together, w/out getting any machine work done?? Thanks!

Ok my 89 chevy 4.3l is pretty well worn. I’d like to pull it, rejuvenate it and drop it back in. No mods or upgrades, just a standard rebuild on a stock engine.

My plan is:
complete gasket set
all new bearings and rings
new oil pump
new sensors

reuse:
cam
crank
rods
pistons
timing gears / chain
valves
maybe reuse valve springs

and take the heads to a machine shop and have them redo the valve guides and seats.

Assuming my internal parts are fine and I don’t need any machine work other than the heads, can someone give me a ballpark? Would I be saving anything rebuilding myself or should I just use the motor as a core deposit?

Is there anything I am forgetting here?

fitzy asked:

I hope someone can shed some light on a few questions.I had a 283 bottom end machined for rebuilding and the machine shop also rebuilt a set of 350 ( Cast no-3947041 / 64 cc Heads ) for me .I built the engine with new pistons rings and bearings. The engine then sat for about 5 years before firing as the hot rods taken a few years to build.Does anyone know the correct plugs for these heads as Ive been running the engine with NGK-BP5FS plugs ( The car is not licenced yet so the engine has only had the cam run in an then fired and run for a while on several occations when moving it)
The plugs are running a bit rich but every time I’ve removed the plugs there’s been oil around the threads of the plug and a bit above.I’ve done a compression test and all cylinders have been between 153 psi & 158 psi I could be wrong but I’m wondering if the Guides were not reconditioned when rebuilt and oil is being let into the bores. Can anyone please shed some light on the problem.

Engine is originally a 283
( Manufactured between 1959 to 1962 which can be bored to 4 inch )
The engine has been bored to 4 inch and has a 3 inch stroke which makes it a 302 CID
