What is the best way to clean up an engine block before rebuilding?

March 27th, 2010
SPEEDY asked:

I have chevy 350 engine i have decided to rebuild myself(my first one). i have gotten all my parts in and now its time to go back together. But i need to clean it to get all the old oil and contaminates out. Someone told me to get a machine shop to boil it but i have called around and the closest machine shop in my area is 70 miles away. Thats a little too far than i wanted to go with gas prices now days. Is there a simpler, at home, way i can clean this engine block. I have a steam/pressure washer. would that be suitable or not? Could i just soak it down with mineral spirits a few times? PLEASE HELP!!
Roughly how much will a machine shop charge me to boil the block?

How big of a HDD can I install on a Sony PCV-RX550?

March 25th, 2010
lurch asked:

I have an older computer, the sony PCV-RX550. My 60 GB HDD is starting to go out, and so I decided it is time to upgrade since it is so hard and not cost effective to try and find a 60 or 80 gb HDD for replacement. i decided to buy a WD 160 gb HDD. The problem is that some friends of mine are telling me that my system may not be able to support or read a drive this big. Now I have all the latest updates from microsoft, and Ive pretty much done everything short of rebuilding the machine to upgrade it. Now Im not sure if im going to have this type of issue or if there is some kind of software or BIOS fix that can be downloaded to solve this issue. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
Im currently running Microsoft xp pro with all the latest updates.

I want to know if I have to rebuild my engine or can I just get away with replacing the bearings and machining the crank? I have a 2003 Celica and I went less than a mile while it was knocking.

Why do the people keep looking for help after they were warned for years about the faulty levees in Louisiana?

March 10th, 2010
Nick the Great asked:

Since 1950 there have been numerous books and articles in reputable scientific magazines explaining that the levees cannot hold back the Mississippi River let alone hurricane storm surges. The river will go were the river wants to go. The fact that the state and parishes and the cities have ignored all the warnings and TURNED DOWN federal help repeatedly(to try to reinforce and reconstruct the levees) seems to be lost on everyone within the CORRUPT POLITICAL machine of that state. Why should we be responsible to help rebuild an area that is CONSTANTLY in danger because most of it is BELOW sea level. Also the gulf coast is receeding at a surprising rate and within 50 years that whole area will be underwater from the Gulf of Mexico. Wouldn’t it make more sense to move the city northward only a few miles, but to an area ABOVE sea level. The delta was formed by the meandering of the river and that’s how rivers work. Why fight those forces and dump our money into a WATER HOLE?
In case Holland comes up again it might be well to note that Holland uses concrete and a lot newer technology that the people of that area were happy to pay for. Louisiana has turned down Federal funds because they were required to match these funds, but that was way before Katrina. So NO I don’t feel sorry. Move 40 moles north and rebuild the city there ABOVE SEA LEVEL.
Make that 40 miles!

what modifications do you recommend if any in rebuilding this engine?

March 3rd, 2010
will69gt asked:

2.7L V6 from a Dodge Intrepid 2000 model. I have researched and am aware of this very flawed engine. Yet, still, I am rebuilding this engine. This car was given to me and is in very nice shape, besides the engine needing repair, due to rod spin. I have already removed the engine, tore all apart, block is in machine shop, gonna get a crank kit, 6 rods and piston set, all gaskets and seals, so most likely a master kit. After I get all that done and back, I will be putting the engine back together at my leisure, and take the 2 heads to machine shop for valve job and check. What modifications any has to make this a good engine is appreciated. I do see the oil drains in the 2 heads are very minimal and poor, along with the exhaust ports, catalaytic convertor, all this overcooking the oil. Any particualur type of oil should be used in this engine, or my newly rebuilt engine? Best plugs, and all other best parts?

Which three books would you take?

February 26th, 2010
Pablo Diablo asked:

This is H.G. Wells’ Time Machine question. If you could pick three books (of reasonable size) to help you rebuild society in the distant future, which ones would you choose? The other people have had no formal education or exposure to literature of any kind.

can any one tell me how the oil pump works in a Wisconsin VH4D?

February 23rd, 2010
hotrodjeff66 asked:

I am rebuilding a Wisconsin VH4D and I can’t figure out how the oil pump works. Behind the idler gear ther is a place for a pipe plug. I can’t remember if there was a plug in it or not. How does the oil get from the oil pump to the oil nozels? The motor has been apart for about 3 months waiting on the machine shop to do the machining and I don’t remember some of the odds & ends. Answers will be greatly appreciated
